username854 May 18, 2005 04:54 PM

i just called up a local hardware store, and i was informed that they are no longer aloud to sell vermiculite, because it is considered a cancer causing carcenogenic, what else works, that i could substitute for vermiculite, and let me know if you guys have heard anything about this.

I just seen small bags of it at a landscape company that sells potted plants/flowers. THey also sell bags of it in the gas fireplace section at Menards (don't know what they use it for there).

you can use Perlite, which is also found in the potting soil area at Wal-Mart, etc .

thanks john, also um how much more reliable is vermiculite over perlite, because i am assuming that vermiculite is a lot better to use.

I really have no preference.

I get my vermiculite at Home Depot. It's in the with indoor plants. I did hear something about vermiculite not being sold a few years ago but luckily it's still avaiblable.
