a tokay has hatched!!!

fliptop May 18, 2005 08:01 PM

Well, mere days after inquiring about shell hardness in tokay gecko eggs, I come back from a long walk to find one of the eggs had hatched. Fortunately I fed my tokays this afternoon, as I'm afraid they might've grabbed the little one.

I saw a dark spot on the egg, and thought it was the baby peeking out. I looked closer to find it had exited the egg. I feared the worst, thinking one of the adults ate it, but found the baby halfway down the 55-gal tank (a two-foot walk from its egg). It was covered in shedding and was having trouble clinging to the wall.

I removed it and put it in a misted deli cup. Can you say precious? As I said, it has shedding on it, and appears to be nice and plump.

I will now consult the AVS book on tokays, but ANY advice on what to do with this little one would be greatly appreciated. I hope the other one makes it as well. BTW, it didn't try to bite, and though it's not my style to handle my geckos, I'm leaning towards seeing how tame they can turn out. Sorry to ramble, but this is extremely exciting to me!

I have never has Tokay (yet) but wanted to say how happy I am for you, yes it is so exciting to see a lizsrd hatch, and also see them healthy and so cute!

I too would have to try and handle him after a couple days , just a short time each day to tame him.

I have heard the babys will bite, but will get tame with much handling and patience.

I wish you all the best with your baby and hope the other one hatches also.

Maybe some pics later for us? LOL

Congrats Andy, so glad to hear. I wouldn't worry to much on the adults snacking on that little guy. They'll actually protect it from you. I find the babies grow faster when left in with the adults. If you try your hand with handling it i would keep it seperate from the adults though. Its pretty neat to see those little guys sitting right next to the adults. I get a few that never try to bite, they are normally the ones that tame pretty well. Just work with it about 10-15 minutes a day so its gets used to coming out and going back to its home. Post some pics, I want to see to. Are you sure it didnt give you one of these looks!

Thanks all for the replies; Dakman, how awesome are these little guys? Here's a couple poor-quality photos taken this afternoon, one of the empty eggs in the distance and one of BOTH babies (yes, the other egg hatched today).

I already separated them, but you're right--Dakota seemed pretty intent on keeping me away from the newest gecko. The female in the egg picture is the sister of the mother, so I guess it's their aunt.

My big question is when do I offer them food? And what do you use for a first-food item? And do you dust the item like for the adults? (I do a three-feeding rotation: 1 feed: calcium; 2 feed: multivitamin; 3 feed: nothing but cricket.

Thanks again! Better pictures later.

The babies. The one on the paper towel hatched last night and is huskier than the one on the glass.

hehe, there great when young. Andy, they will start eating the first night, like you noticed them shedding right away. they are fierce hunters when that small and great to see how excited they get over food. I always get small crix to start them out with. They grow fast the first month. I lightly dust food with calci every night except for one maybe two that i use vit/minerals. I have no set in stone method but somewhere right along those lines has produced healthy babies for me. I dust more often when this young because of their growth rate to insure good nutrition and development. congrats on the second hatchling.

The 2 new kids are just so cute, glad ya posted, would love to see them as they grow. I also loved the lil guy gaping, hehehe funny how they are so tiny yet so tough, LOL.

I see this all the time with hatchling collareds, just hatched but they will gape and look as though they would take your finger off, ahahahahhahaa so cute!

Great pics guys,
