Pre-Killed question

CHEeeEZZZ May 18, 2005 08:30 PM

Im attempting a small p/k rat to convert my ball to rats but i dont want anything to do w/ the rat fighting back. I dont have the CO2 option for killing the rat so i was hoping some one would have some tips for me other than bashing the poor little guy against the wall. Ill check back in a little while. Thanks

Pin the rat behind the neck (I use a ruler to do this) take his tail and lift it up. This snaps the neck and he dies.

You may want to google "euthanizing rats." There are a few university research articles on proper methods of killing rodents. All articles mention that killing rats larger than 200g by dislocating their spine (aka "cervical dislocation," where you pin the rats head with a ruler or bar and yank its tail) is NOT ethical; large rats have big neck muscles and it is physically difficult to make a clean break. Freezing is also considered inhumane unless you have liquid nitrogen.

He did say small rat - which is generally less than 100 grams and it's quite easy and humane. You are correct the big suckers it's much harder and your more likely to pull the tail off before the neck snaps.
