Calcium sand good or bad?

LeoGirl May 18, 2005 08:49 PM

I have now read alot of caresheets and got 2 different answers. Is calcium sand bad for the leopard geckos or not? I got 2 adult females and this sunday I'm getting 3 more. 1 male and 2 female all three are 3 to 4 inches long. Is it ok for them? and will they be alright together in the same aquairuim? (can i add the 3 babies with the 2 adult females?)

3-4 inches long? absolutely not. Most people will say that calci-sand is potentially harmful and I think all would say that calci-sand should not be used for a gecko that small. I just put my 6-7 inch female on some of this stuff and I am on pins-and-needles about it. I am thinking of taking her off and replacing with paper towels. I think buying this stuff is a mistake in general if you feed your gecko crickets in there. Think about it, when they attack the crickets, little bits get in their mouths and collect in there stomaches. Seems harmful to me!

I totally agree! Calci sand is a no no! Even though I'm not a fan of sand at all if you want to put them on it please use reg play sand instead of calci sand. If you are feeding crickets I urge you not to use sand at all. Calci sand globs up when it gets wet and just imagine what that can do when it does it in the geckos stomach. Very fatal if not caught in time. Also, please wait until they are bigger. You might also want to plan on seperating the male once they get to be about 6 in long. It really stresses the girls because once he becomes sexually mature he'll be forever trying to breed. Good luck, don't be hesitant to ask any more questions.

First off, you shouldn't add babies with adults.

Secondly, Calci-sand is bad. ESPECIALLY If your Leo is under 6 inches long. But calci-sand clumps when it gets wet. If you want to use sand go with something REALLY find liek Repti-sand or Vita Sand. However, I wouldn't use sand at all, but repti-carpet or paper towels. It reduces ANY risk of impaction.

Calci-sand is bad for your leos health and is also insanely expensive and a big rip-off. If you really want sand buy washed, screened, fine particle play sand from home depot, it costs about 3$ for a 50lb bag. Although there are many safer substrates (reptile carpet, paper towels, newspaper, shelf liner, linolium, tile etc..).

As far as puting them together never mix babies with adults, all of your leos should be the same size before you put them together. You also want to make sure they are old enough to sex so you dont put two males together. And remember, before adding any leo's to an exsisting collection you need to quarantine them for at least 60-90days in a seperate enclosure.

Woops, I didn't catch that you were wanting to add teh smaller ones with the adults. It's a very bad idea, the lil ones will get really stressed and maybe even become a meal..also I meant to mention the quarantine issue. It's very important to quarantine any new animal you get to prevent any problems they might have from infecting your other leos or herps.
