toad gender question

frogger1985 May 18, 2005 11:01 PM

I moved to the courantry last fall. I see toads around my house every night. I have caught quite a few. They are all different sizes and shades. The odd thing is...i have only found males. I have not seen a female toad. I have even been out walking around the pond and seen toads but they have all been males too. I know that the males would be there to call females. There have been some females because there are toad tadpoles, along with many others, in the water. My question is if there is something like temp or weather that may cause more of the toads to become males than females?

Thanks

In a very generalized statement - high temperatures produces mostly males while lower temperatures produces more females.

Also - females sort of hang out on the fringes, sizing up the attractiveness of the males.
