How do you remove duct tape from a snake

Chareen May 18, 2005 11:30 PM

I'm an idiot. I'm admitting that from the start.

Long story short my snake has duct tape stuck on him. I am thinking I should use q-tips and vegetable oil to try and remove it.

What are everyone's thoughts?

It does seem to be pulling at his skin. I can't leave it there.

Thanks in advance.

Use the oil and GO SLOW...he will be slippery to, so have another person help you if you can....Then wash him in Dawn dish soap. Don't get soap in his eyes and nose though.
Good luck!

Try goo-gone, Yet another victum of the taped cage cover, will we ever learn?

Trim as much off as you can, and if it's painfully stuck, leave it on. He'll shed it off with the next shed.

Yes...trim as much as you can..as doug said.. the snake would eventually shed and the tape would go with the shed skin.

You can use goo-gone if the tape is no where near the head, but still there is a chance the snake can get it in his eyes and mouth and that would not be a good thing...so you kind of have to supervise the snake the entire time you are treating him with that stuff.

I have had great luck in treating snakes that have been brought to me by people where the snake was caught in glue traps using smooth peanut butter. I would assume the principle would be the same since the sticky part of duct tape is just another type of glue. I'd slather the crevice between tape and skin with peanut butter and leaving it on for half an hour...brush away the dried up parts of the peanut butter and then slowly pull the tape back a little bit more re-applying fresh peanut butter into the new crevice.... repeat process until you get the tape off. As you get a decent amount of tape off..trim it so it doesn't try to restick to the snake or something in the cage.
