You may get a stern warning from UPS but that's about as far as it will go. If you want to be proactive and do the right thing, contact your UPS shipper and alert them to the situation and apologize. They will be much more understanding if you are upfront about it. I always ship snakes out via Delta and even though you didn't know (although ignorance is still no excuse), there are many breeders out there who break the law purposely and that is not good and just gives our hobby another black eye.
As far as the guy you shipped the snake out to, he would be just as guilty because he knew you were shipping UPS (and I would personally ask him to ship the dead snake back to you; there are many unscrupulous people out there who will take advantage of people).
