Average time spent diging "test holes" before laying?

Chaman May 19, 2005 12:25 PM

Hi everyone! My female nosey has been digging in her sand box for the last 3 days. Is it normal to dig this long? Also i found an egg on the bottom of her cage today! The rest seem to be nowhere to be found unless she laid them in the plant pot. I know this is not normal and i am quite worried. Also how long after laying do panthers usually take to go back to their non gravid colors? Any info would be great!
Thanks

How big is your sand box? Females can be picky at finding the right area to lay eggs...I would suggest putting her in a large garbage can with moist sand at least 1-2 feet deep. Mine usually test dig for 2-3 days before laying. Finding an egg at the bottom of the cage means that your laying site is not suitable. You need to get her in the right egg laying chamber right away otherwise she might become egg bound.

ok ill get her in a can right away. Should i keep the lid on it or off so she can see?

Chaman May 19, 2005 03:01 PM

Should i add branches for her to climb on?

zenexotics May 19, 2005 06:55 PM

Yes, you should put in some perches, plants, or vines and a screen top, or if the container is large and high enough a top might not be necessary. If she stays in there more than a day put her heat and uv light on there and mist her down as usual, but it seems like she is ready to lay in your description. Hope it all goes well.

I don't use this method for Luna (she digs, she lays!) but lots of folks do - here is an article describing the methoid and should help answer questions.

I will say that if she dropped an egg, and has been digging, she is most likely more than ready for her new big nest site ASAP!

Good luck - keep us posted!

Ok, i put her in a 32 gal trashcan half full of mixed sand and supersoil right after i read your post yesterday. The soil mixture is about 18inches deep. I put some Mullberry leaves in there too just to make it seem a little natural I came and checked on her this morning 8:50 and it didnt appear that she had even attempted to dig. Is it possible she may have laid her eggs and then covered up the hole well enough for it to look level with the rest of the soil? The leaves i put in there are definatly moved and her eyes are a little sunk in like she has been working hard at something. AHHH! The anticipation is killing me... i hope everything is ok.

Hey shes digging right now! Yeah! What a relief

lele May 20, 2005 03:21 PM

- I sure know that "FINALLY!" feeling! I hope she goes thru with it this time. She may spend the night there b/t digging, laying and filling back in so try not to disturb as you don't want her to stop. Once she has finished and filled everything back in out her back in her cage and give her plenty to drink. Sometimes Luna eats immediately after but there was one time she did not eat for a full day. Hydration is the most important. Keep us posted - are these fertile?

Yours is sweet! Clutch due anytime soon?
Thanks for your help, you and lele

zenexotics May 21, 2005 09:28 AM

No problem Chaman! I don't have any clutches from my Nosey Be's yet...mine are so moody, when the male wants to, the female doesn't and vice versa....very frustrating. But I have 2 clutches of Tamatave's in the oven right now.

Any word on the eggs and the female?
