Lancaster cruising report 5-18

metalpest May 19, 2005 01:41 PM

Good year so far. Here is what we found:

1 DOR Gopher
2 AOR 2 DOR Mojaves (Crotalus scutulatus)
1 Cal King 2'11" SVL
2 DOR Southern Pacifics (Crotalus oreganus helleri)
1 Longnose 1'10"
1 DOR glossy

Upper to mid 60s and breezy, drove for just over 2 hours. One of the mojaves was possibly critically injured in the head, he didnt seem to be able to see very well. Thought he was dead but when I tried to remove him from the road he sprung to life and began trying to get away. The longnose may have been hit, couldnt tell, but he was acting funny. His head was poking at his body and he wasnt moving much, but was able to tongue flick. Didnt try to get away when put down either. I couldnt find any injuries on it, but it seemed very peculiar.

Now for the pics:

C. scutulatus

The cal king

And the poor longnose

Thanks for the post-- that king looks rather slender, are the kings in your area typically thin?

I thought that they all were like that. We have a wild caught one here (rescued) which is really thick, thicker than any other king Ive seen, but yeah I would say they are typically that slender. We found one last year that was 48" and I dont think it was any thicker than the one we found last night. Our thicker one is only about 32", and she laid eggs after being caught back in 03 I think. Strange I think, but the king last night didnt seem malnurished or anything, no ribs showing and he was active, it hasnt been too warm at night until recently so Im assuming they are just coming out to get food after winter and he was still hunting for a delicious mojave rattlesnake, shouldnt take him too long we see lots of those!
