Northern NV herping

trivirgata May 19, 2005 02:17 PM

Went out yesterday with my best friend and herpen buddy (pictured below) here in northern Nevada. This pond is up over 6000 ft. It’s a secret Dove hunting spot and takes 4X4 to get there. It’s amazing to find spots like this in the upper plateau Great Basin Desert. This year produced record breaking rain, filling this pond over capacity. The wild flowers were amazing too. We saw tons of Fence Lizards (S. occidentalis) and Boreal Tods (B. b. boreas) along it’s shore line, but only 2 snakes. A big Great Basin Gopher (P. m. deserticol) and last years
baby Great Basin Rattlesnake (C. v. lutosus). The Gopher had a lot of contrast with a black pattern on a bright yellow ground color. The Lutosus had a very busy pattern with a lot of contrast. It was a great day just to be away from work and chores.

Wow cool lotosus. Is that a viridis or oreganus subspecies? I got confused after the split, we have southerns here which are C. o. helleri, but I dont recall where lotosus went.

Looks like a big gopher you found there, great finds!
