Mold Issue

becki71 May 19, 2005 02:34 PM

I picked up my torts food bowl which is a plastic lid that I use and under it was a bunch of mold. I'm sure this is not good for my tort! I haven't had any problems with mold before. We just recently added some bark with sand. Can't remember off the top of my head what brand it was. It came in a brick form and you put it in water and it expands. Could it be that? I have been spraying down the sand mixture about once a week....maybe too much moisture? I scooped out all the moldy area but I'm worried that there could be more in the pen that I am not seeing....not sure if I should go ahead and change the whole thing or not. How dangerous is mold to a small tort? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!!!

You're using coconut bark - which is what I'm using right now.

I get mold too - usually around organic material - poo, a bit of food, etc. I clean it out when I see it and mix up the substrate almost every day (helps me to stay on top of the humidity too).

I'm not too worried about it - the tank is tidied daily so the mold is never in there for very long at all. It's hard when you have to keep humidity up, I must say.

I'm working on my red-foot's summer outdoor pen right now, but it won't be ready for another week or two.
