Anyone know what's wrong with my beardie?

Irondog May 19, 2005 07:19 PM

I've noticed that my 3 year old male dragon has just been noticably less active for the past few days.

Today I noticed he has a hump in his back just behind his shoulders. He looks a little like a hunchback. I also noticed him stumble a couple of times when he did decide to walk around.

Illness? Injury?

Anyone see anything like this before?

Hi,
When's the last time he pooped? He could be impacted. Temp/husbandry info?

Temperature and tank setup are fine.

Not sure when he last pooped. I clean crap out daily, but not sure if it's from him or my girl. Also, the hunch is just behind his shoulders, where I imagine his lungs must be. Can impaction be up there? I've also occasionally noticed very slight twitching along his sides near the hunch. I've heard of twitching from calcium deficiency, but he gets calcium all the time.

I'm thinking maybe he somehow injured himself? Whatever it is, I hope he gets better soon.

Best thing to do is take him to a vet. If it is calcium deficiency blood work will determine that. If an injury or infection the vet will be able to determine it from an examination. He could have been injuried either in a fall, fight with the female or other reason. I wouldn't wait till it hopefully goes away as it may not go away and he could get worse.

Does he have access to a UVB source? Even with lots of calcium they can still develop MBD without exposure to UVB light. Twichting and lumps, especially along or near the spine are signs of this.

Are you sure your temps are hot enough? And is their basking spot lit with a bright spot lamp? If temps are too low or if their isn't a bright light to stimulate sunlight they will not always process calcium correctly either. (there are reports of people who only heated their tanks with ceramic heaters instead of bulbs have beardies that come down with MBD symptoms) They should have access top a bright basking spot between 105-115degrees.

Regardless of the problem dont just wait for it to get better because it probably wont. A visit to a good reptle vet is in order.

Hope this helps! Good luck,

Mim

from the female if they're still together.

No sense risking her health if he's got some sort of infection, and frankly unless you want them breeding they should be apart anyway....right?
