Amazon Tree Boa Aquarium

luxury_of_tears0 May 19, 2005 07:54 PM

Hey. I'm new to amazon tree boas. I recently got a garden phase. This is my setup: 30 gallon high aquarium with screen lid. (Don't yell at me just yet.) I have it covered 1/2 of the way with a ceramic tile and a towel. My heat lamp is 6 inches, and I use a 60 watt ceramic heater on 24/7. I have 3 waterbowls at the bottom covering roughly 1/2 of the floor and plenty of driftwood. I also have a pothos in the corner. I spray it daily a whole bunch of times. I don't have much of a problem actually getting humidity up to 80-90%, but I have problems with keeping it up high for more than an hour. I know I should've got a plastic cage or something specifically for arboreals, but they're so expensive, and I was pretty convinced I would be ok as long as I kept it covered 1/2 way. humidity usually gets down to 47-50%. Is there any way I could keep in the humidity for a longer period of time with this setup?

P.S. Sorry about the long post.

Actually sounds pretty good.
First off, humidity is fine at 50-60 percent, 70 and up you are looking for fungal trouble(scale rot) bad stuff.
Really the only thing i would watch is mold tword the bottom of the cage, one thing you can do is buy a 7 dollar clip on fan and run it on low just over the top of the cage to pull out stagnet air, good circulation is necessary.

other than that you are sitting pretty good as far as i can tell...

welcome aboard

I agree, you have the right idea. You don't want constant humidity above 70, instead think of the weather in the tropics. They usually have an afternoon rainshower that increases the humidity for a couple hours. You don't want it to stay wet in there. Watch for skin troubles, but don't worry if your snake has perfect sheds and stays hydrated.
