Cuban rock iguana stays constipated till he is released from cage

buzzard1 May 19, 2005 07:57 PM

My cuban rock iguana will hardly ever poop or pee inside his cage. The cage is kept clean and he lives in a good size 75 gallon aquarium with aspen chips as beeding. I would really like to let him free roam more then I do but he always takes a dump on my carpet 10 minutes or so after I take him out of his cage. Im guessing he is one of the more clean lizzards to where he doesnt wana crap where he eats or saomthign like that. I tried putting him in my tub first so he will go in there before letting him run around but even after he deficates in the tub he will pee some more on the carpet and its not very fun. So if any one has any sugestions I would like to hear them. By the way this isnt normal behavier from my past experiences with all my other monitors tegus and iguanas.

thanks
chris

imo very typical behavior especially for a male. mine do it all the time. have you had a male cyclura before? My green igs never did it either.

No. I had a female rino and alot of my lizzards have been female except my argentine B/W tegu. Ok so if he is marking his territory will he continue to always do it or is there any tricks that might make my life a lil easier rather then cleaning poop every time he comes out.

I dunno. The reason I asked about having one before is that maybe you had a male that didn't do it. maybe once they figure out that the space is already theirs they will not feel the need. mine are adults and still feel the need.

Well I have been paying atention to my cuban alot mroe and I dont think he is marking his teritory. I picked him up today and pet him above the cage and he took a giant pee/poop (it seemed like he was backed up). Then I pet him some more above his aquatium and he went again. So now Im thinking he is just getting the crap scared out of him and he just has so much crap that he has to go twice. I do worry that this may not be healthy for him to hold it in for a few days at a time like this. My old rhino who died a few months back used to do the same thing, crap every time you picked him up. Maybe he will grow out of it like he did with eating. He used to not eat to much for the first 6 weeks I had my cuban but now he is a super pig. He will usally eat out of my hand which is so cool that he trusts me enough. If any of you people are looking for a iguana that has a good dispostion the cubans are it in my opion. They dont get spooked out as easy and they arnt to afraid of humans. They do grow a lil slower then the rhinos but the personality in thios cuban compared to my old rhino is amazing, the lizzard actually puts up with the dog which is kinda funny cause I knwo the lizzard will be bossing the dog around soon as he continues to get bigger. I know iguanas dont like dogs but Dino (my cuban) just thinks my dog is a weirdo and ignores her half the time. My dog is a lil rat terrier named daisy and she is just curiouse of the the thing. I will say I wont leave the 2 unatended together but neither of them would hurt each other from what I have observed.
Any wyas Im gonna just hodl the iguana mroe and hope that the pooping will stop some day soon so Im not spot cleaning the whole time he is out of his cage free roaming
