Zeus my banded whitethroat died last night around 3am.

SHvar May 19, 2005 10:35 PM

I am going to find out exactly why yet. Confused, havent had a monitor die on me for years. Strange, nothing different with him until 2 days ago, then he acted strange, but not too strange until lastnight before he died. His cage and anything in it etc are going to be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected just in case.
Zeus RIP..

Sorry to hear that. I hope it is a long long time before any others die, of old age.

Sorry to hear you lost one of your babies, and such a beautiful one at that. I think that is one of the hardest thing I've found about owning reptiles; they are so good at hiding that something is wrong. I suppose that it is a survival tactic, but it sure stinks when even experienced, successful keepers can occasionally lose one unexpectedly.

hope you find out what caused his death.

Did he show any symptoms of any ailments?

SHvar May 20, 2005 09:43 PM

He became off balance and twitchy when he walked (what little of that happened). The only difference that night otherwise was that he ate 3 adult mice beforehand. All of my albigs picked times of the year after being adults that they went underground and were not hungry for 2 weeks, 1 week, or more, so nothing was unusual there.
Its strange he was normal until that day, but only a bit lazy that day, then that night he went from somewhat normal to twitchy, shakey, and eyes sunken in 1 hours time. He ate for the first time in 2 weeks an hour before he died. This bothered me because the 4th mouse went to Sobek, she is still the same as always, absolutely normal.
The lack of symptoms and sudden onset so quickly really caught me off guard fast. Been wracking my brain to remember anything out of the ordinary in the last 2 weeks with him. The last thing he ate before this was a few big hissers, 2 weeks or more ago.

sounds like something hit him fast. If you have a necropsy done have them check of course the oragans and also see if they can check the cerebral spinal fluid for any bacteria.

Good luck and hope you find something out.

How strange. With those symptoms, if he were human, I'd suspect a stroke. Hope you get a definitive answer.

That’s rotten… It’s so hard to tell what is going on with them sometimes. Sorry for your loss, let us know if you find out anything.
Take care, -H-

Very sorry for your loss amigo, hope you find out definately what it was that caused this.

SHvar May 20, 2005 09:49 PM

Get along, its unfortunate this happened.
Him and Sobek were my trash compactors, anything that noone else would eat or was hungry for they ate it with almost no hesitation.

RobertBushner May 22, 2005 02:21 AM

Sorry Shawn
