Challenge for newbies

kap10cavy May 19, 2005 11:58 PM

I will be going out of town for a Tae Kwon Do tounament and have a challenge for you.
Look at your cages and lizards. See if you can find improvemnts.
They are there to be made. Nobodys cages are perfect, not mine, not FR's(sorry needed another name)not anyones.
If you listen to your critter that is sitting in the cage, it will tell you things. I have just recently learned to understand this and think it is important to be able to hear what your critter is saying.
For instance, my albig has told me he needs 2 different water sources, one to poo in and one to drink from.
One of my savs is telling me she still is not happy with her dirt. My wife's baby sav is telling me it wants to be in a quieter place. Too many kids.
All I have been able to get from my argus is, "hey man, ya got any more food?" and it likes mud. Strange lizard that argus.
Well get to it and let me know what you find out.
Everyone can play, this isn't just for newbies.

My Blackthroat told me she wants deeper dirt. She also said to keep the mice coming.

My Niles told me that they want baby mice.

My rabbits told me that that one of them is getting ready to have babys.

My Caimen told me it is ready for a bigger enclosure.

My wife's snakes told me to take them out and let them crawl around.

My chickens told me that I should have built them a better coupe.

My cat just naggs me all the time. I gave up listening to it unless it wants to go outside.

My dog told me to scratch it behind the ears and on the belly.

My wife said ... (nevermind)

These heat lamps make my electric bill to high.

FR May 20, 2005 09:48 AM

I am sending you a bill for messing up my computer.

As I was reading you post, I laughed so hard, I spit coffee all over my computer, its a complete mess, and no ones to blame but you.

It was not the cage improvements, of course, ours are in constant need of improvement and I am constantly working on them. A never ending battle. Which is why I cannot understant the, this is my PERMANET CAGE, statements often made here.

It was that dang argus paragraph, It only tells you, more food and likes mud. hahahahahahahahahahahahaha, yea, whats up with that? Mud! they do like mud, but then so does most kids. FR

I have only had the argus for a couple of months.
He has told me other things. One is he wants a bigger cage.
The one he keeps repeating to me over and over is, "Hey, I don't want that put there!"
The critter is like a kid, it flings dirt into the water bowl then digs in the mud. I will pull it out after it is done playing and fill it with clean water. He just looks at me like "Dude, you will never learn" and proceeds to fill it back up.

I have that same ongoing battle with my two. I must haved moved that water bowl 50 times, and they still fill it with dirt. Love them Gouldii complex!

I almost forgot, pay for your own repairs. If you wouldn't have told me to listen to my monitors a long time ago, I would have never made this post. See, noone to blame but yourself.
I do appreciate that bit of advise, listening to them has taught me more than any book or web site.

The monitor is the one and only book. The rest are only interpitations of little tiny bits of chapters of the book/s.

I think some of my learned friends(loosely applied) confuse books/papers/articules, with the real thing. Of course the only real thing is the monitors as a group, as a species, and as individuals.

I have said in the past, I do not treat monitors differently according to species, I find it more benefitual to treat them as individuals first and formost. After all, we are truly dealing with individuals.

Back to my friends(again loosely applied) They often attack me, for things my monitors "actually did" not for things I did. For instance, multiclutching and fast growth and bonding, and living in groups are, "things the monitors did" I feel they should be mad at the monitors, not me, hahahahahahahahahaha

I like one thing your doing really well, your having/trying, to have fun. Keep it up, FR

kap10cavy May 22, 2005 02:35 PM

I took some of your advise a while ago and it pertained to all captive animals, not just monitors.
That advise was to watch and learn from the only expert you need.
The experts aren't writing books and papers. The experts aren't posting on websites. The experts are living in cages in my house.
Not your exact words, but that is what I got out of it.
I enjoy them all and make sure the crazy argus doesn't take time away from the albig and savs.
When I quit learning and having fun, then you will see them all for sale. I highly doubt that is going to happen any time soon. hahaha

Very thoughtful question, I like it

Scooter the mangrove says
He would like more space, in a 12 x12 room closet now.

He says he would like more eggs that are incubated almost to term –yumyumyummy!-

He says he wants more water he likes to float, but would love to SWIM, he has a 6x4 water tub.

He says he wants to go outside more, (everyday it is not rainy/cold. He says he is lonely and wants a scaly companion.

The tristis trio Mosey, Rivette, & Cali say
They would like a little more room, they are very active when they think no one is watching! They are in a 5x3x3.

DON’T MIST THE ENCLOSURE!!! We hate it!

We wish our enclosure were taller and had more vertical crevices/hides.

We need some rougher branches, driftwood is too smooth.

I’m at my limit with Scooter, but I am in the process to of changing the things that are within my power for the tristis.
Cheers and thanks everyone for sharing! -H-

hmm,

My argus usually tells me "mice or your fingers, I don't care just feed me five minutes ago moron". Maybe it is say mud too, as a language I'm still learning argus . I'll have to consider mud in my new enclosure that I'll be building at my new home.

0.1 argus monitor

joeysgreen May 23, 2005 04:19 AM

My mangrove says he loves his change of substrate to shredded bark. (He had the mud, and loved it like the argus's do, but it eventually rotted the wooden cage)

I think every forum should have this challenge, as FR said, some people just don't get it, and have a "permenent cage".

LizardMom May 23, 2005 09:15 PM

Late, as usual!

My remaining ackie has told me that it has a short memory for the deceased cage mate, or that it has finally decided that the other ackies is simply not there. It also likes the new, closer stacked cork bark, even though I wasn't sure the spaces were big enough for an ackie to fit between!

Bubba says, "Mice!!! More mice!! Don't like chasing rats; you don't give me as many of those. More mice!!! The dog is telling me you are bringing more mice!" (The dog has a particular bark he only uses when he sees me carting mice by the tail. Bubba knows this bark, and is out like a shot when he hears it. Other barking he ignores.)
