For all Dum keepers out there whose juveniles wont feed

UKBorneoGuy May 20, 2005 08:40 AM

After Breeding Dums last year and keeping back two babies which werent feeding at the time I can reveal the best method of getting them to feed IMO. After being born in Sept neither baby fed until this week which shows just how stubborn these animals can be. I had tried everything(except live which are impossible to get hold of here in England) with mice and rats and they hardly gave them a sniff. Then this week I managed after months to get hold of some Quail chicks. All I did was warm one up for the first dum and it was taken immediately. the second dum refused at first but once I started wiggling the chick around it went for it. Forget Live and get hold of some Quails and you shouldnt have a dum food problem again!!!

I have postd this advice here many times. I have a 3 year old and he only ate quail for his first year. Alot of people on this forum think this is bad advice but it worked great for me. Here is a picture of him when he was less than a year.

Mine both seemed to really enjoy the quail and i am very pleased they are eating as neither had fed for 7 months. I know Quail go up to about 300g so my plan is to keep them on the birds for the next 6-10 months and see if i can scent them onto rats. I can't see how feeding Quail is bad advice if it gets a snake to eat.
They may be expensive here but the main thing IMO is to get the snakes eating and I think from now on I'm going to offer quails every time to difficult dumeril young.

I bred him to his mother and one other female. Both are acting gravid. They have stopped eating and are sitting on the heat pad alot. I will let you know if and when I get babies. Thanks
