What would you reccomend I breed?

TorMato May 20, 2005 02:52 PM

Hello,

I might be running into a bit of cash, (1300 usd) and was thinking for the future.....
With money like that, what would you suggest I invest in, as far as breedable pairs are concerned?

The only mature breedable snake I own right now is an adult female carpet python. I'd rather not breed coastals, because they seem to have larger clutches, and Im not sure they would all sell (if the hatch rate was high).

The two Ive been thinking about are, bloods, and GTPs. My male GTP is almost there- I say two more months of rats and complete digestion and he'll be ready to handle cooling periods.

Bloods seem interesting as well. But I have slowly learned that their colors dont breed truly, so If i invested in blood RED parents, it wouldn't guarentee that the babies would turn out blood red. Which is unfortunate.

Im leaning towards GTPs, since they fetch the highest price, allowing me to invest more into this hobby/extremely small business. I realize for a second time breeder (did balls) this is probably a challenge, but Ive always been up for one. Seems the biggest challenge would be keeping the incubator high in humidity without having wet eggs. That and propogating

Bloods seem desireable because the eggs are allowed to touch the water, and the female seems to take special interest in making sure the eggs are incubated at the proper temperature. I don't know right now, any thoughts? I await your interesting responses...thanks.
best,
John

I'd get a paper and pen out and write down all the species you want to work with. Determine which ones you would enjoy the absolute most that are in the price range.

You may find you still need more money to get what you want.

Womas, Bloods or maybe some Diamond pythons.... it's all good.

Small power house of a snake that eats like a waterbuffalo.

I dont like the fact that womas lack labial pits though. Kinda ditracts from the attractiveness of pythons for me. Beautiful snake other wise!

I was also thinking of breeding something not so popular, say White lips or Olives? My female white lip is quite mature...

thanks,

Thanks for the compliment
Well they are the "first" pythons and do look different without the facial pits but they are so very easy to keep and breed, sort of like a giant kingsnake.
