HELP with corn snake eggs.....

Charlotte May 20, 2005 03:40 PM

Hi all.

I recently aquired a clutch of eggs from a very irresponsible person.

I had told him to set up a box for the female to lay her eggs in, and I had told him to set up an incubator and how.
Needless to say, this person didn't listen to me, went out of town and while gone she laid 10 pretty white eggs in her enclosure.

He arrived home, noticed the eggs (which had been laid on newspaper) placed them in a cardboard box with cheap green pet store moss, and called me.

I told him I would take them and had an incubator already set up.

DAYS later he contacts me to give me the eggs. He had been keeping them in the box with moss and misting them many times a day directly. He had also kept them in the enclosure under the heat lamp.

When I received them, they were rolling around in the box, dried up and dented.

Long story short, they are now safe in my incubator and 3 of the 10 eggs have plumped up, are dent free, and seem to be doing well. 4 are still iffy, and 3 are most certainly dead. One is growing mold and has bloody spots on the inside, the other 2 just have bloody spots on the inside and are starting to rot.

I was told that they should be removed from the incubator.

But my problem is, that the 3 dead eggs are all stuck to one very good looking egg. I fear that if I try to pry them apart that I will hurt the seemingly good egg. I thought about cutting them off, but once again don't know if I should do that.

So I decided to consult my fellow kingsnake friends and see what advice you all might have.

Any and all comments appreciated!!!

Thanks!
Charlotte

Just leave them there. You don't want to damage the other eggs. They'll be fine if you leave the bad eggs in.

In your shoes, I'd say leaving the bad eggs is less of a risk than trying to prise them off the good egg.

Generally, a healthy egg will have mould-resistant properties. If you want to add extra protection you could dust it lightly with Athlete's Foot powder.

If you try and separate them, you run the risk of rupturing the good egg whilst spreading the mould spores around.

Good luck!

I have bad eggs right up against the good ones every year, and have experienced no noticeably higher mortality rate due to contact with bad eggs than I have had with the ones that are up against the good eggs. I did tear an eggs shell open once when trying to remove a bad egg from a clutch, and I killed the zygote. That's why I just stopped worrying about it, and let the good eggs do their thing...live!
Good eggs dont' go bad. (often...)
