Columbian Red Tail Boa's

Wyeknottyboi May 20, 2005 04:21 PM

I have a pair of Columbian Red Tail Boas... The male is 7ft, very big and heavy (eats 1 small rabbit a week) and the female is 5ft with awesome pink coloiring (eats 1 large rat weekly).. Both are dog tame, the male more than the female. The female does hiss from time to time but never has struck. I plan on breeding them in 6 months or so when the female is of age (male is 3yrs, the female is 1.5 yrs old)... I just had some questions for someone who might have experience breeding snakes.. I know that since they are boa's that its live birth (no eggs) which makes it easier on me, but i dont know much about how feeding goes while the female is pregnant and what i should do about the male being in the same cage once he gets the female pregnant because i only have one big enclosure for the both of them and if im going to have to seperate i wanna get a jump start on building a new cage.

I can pretty much use ANY/ALL information that someone who has experience breeding Columbian Red Tail Boa's can tell me as this will be my first time breeding.

Thanks in advance

Don't breed unless you are properly prepaired. I can just picture 25 babies housed together with 2 adult boas. Not a nice picture. Also, your female may be too young to breed.

I came and posted in hope of becoming more prepared... I am now aware that once the female is impregnated that the male should be housed seperatly. I was also told that the babies could be housed with the mother for 2 or so days then each baby placed in seperate containers.. Please do correct me if any information i was given is incorrect. I am also aware that the female wont be ready for breeding untill she is 2 yrs old. Any help you guys can give me will be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

about the best advice i can give you is to go buy the "Boa Constrictor Manual" it's got a big breeding section by Jeff Ronne, and he knows a thing or three about breeding boas. what you've been told so far sounds alright, but there's more! read, read, read!!!

and good luck!
