Blueys fart????

Turt-Liz-Wiz May 21, 2005 09:37 AM

When my bluey gets quite startled (when i'm handling him), he usually tries to deffecate as a defense mechanism. But, instead, usually he farts (wich can frighten me as well, not as bad as deffecating though). Question : does anyone have blueys that also fart after his/her meal? Is this normal, or should i improve on his diet? thx in advance

What's his diet?

Turt-Liz-Wiz May 23, 2005 09:00 AM

Well, i feed him veggies (carrots, bok choy, kale, a little lettuce, bean sprouts, green beans, some corn, celery, and morning glory). I also feed him the occasional meallies, earthworms and crickets. some prepared food occasionally, like canned dog food (mixed with the veggies), and some soaked bird pellets. I almost forgot, i also feed him bananas, apples, papaya, strawberries, and some honey, mixed with the veggies to make it pallatable. Not to forget one of his favorites, eggs. Thats about it (i think)
(P.S : they call morning glory, where i live, "kang kong", and seems to be a nice stapple, not only for bluey, but also for my turts ^^)

I'm going to guess it could be diet related - especially the eggs which should not be given too often. Some other thoughts: Lettuce is also worthless, not sure corn is a good idea, I don't think (if I recall) that celery has much to offer, the canned food could contribute I guess, not sure about bird seeds (I know people use them for Uros) - a lot of the foods being fed are pretty high in phosporous and low in calcium.

BTS in the wild are much more carnivorous/insectivorous. I think your diet is too much vegetable fiber and not enough protein.

Add more insects (apple snails from an aquarium shop are a great treat, as are slugs collected from a pesticide-free area) and skip the big salads. I use mustard greens, which are pretty much the bomb in the dark leafy green department, finely chopped into the food mix 3 times a week. Fruit is a treat and I stick with just mangos and kiwi.

Where i live, they dont have any apple snails. All i can find are tiny iti bity freshwater snails, or, huge, fist sized land snails (and, the land snails are extremely disgusting >> expirience from disecting em on 1'st grade 0_o). There are some slugs in my garden, but they seem to produce a nasti chemical that makes the predator itch (good thing it wasnt deadly to my turt, yet another expirience, i will NEVER feed life slugs again!!!). I found out, that if i kill (boil) the slug in hot water, it will secrete its mucus on its own, leaving a "preekilled" tasty treat, but i'm not sure if they are free of parasites (thank goodnes i never got a sick pet from feeding em). But i'm not feeding slugs anymore now anyway. All i can find are the meallies and crix. Give em a light dusting of calcium & vitamis gutloading em (doh). Another interesting food stuff that i found are, ant eggs. I fed em once to my Mabuya, and he/she liked it. The thing is, they reek to high heaven, and have a good job atracting flies!!! I dont feed pinks (cant see a pink eaten alive) they dont sell any preekilled food (what a shame), wich is why i dont think will be keeping any snakes in the near future. Perhaps boiled chicken? Anybody got other advices ?

ZooPreem Monitor/Tegu food. You can buy it online (shop around). I used to get a case of it at time (I had other lizards that ate it). My skinks thrived on it.

Pretty good price for a case.

Any snails are fine. I feed the small freshwater snails from the petstore - they give them to me free because they are a nusiance to them.

Check out the caresheet on: www.bluetongueskinks.net
For meat I feed Cooked chicken breasts, ground chicken, ground turkey, ground lean beef, beef cubes (like you buy for pot roast), silkworms, waxworms, live snails (you can buy snails in the can-Zoomed now has them with shells on).

Collard greens are the best green for your blue nutrition wise. It's especially useful if you need to gain calcium in the diet. The ratio to phosphorus is something like 14 to 3. And land snails are the best! Just put them in a coffee can for a couple days with water and a few of their leaves they eat, and if they live, you're good to go.
