caught a nice black rat while fishing today

draybar May 21, 2005 01:00 PM

Caught a nice black rat snake, basking on a wall, while I was fishing this morning.
Man this thing had one heck of a lump. I'm not sure what it had eaten but it was definitely full.

Outstanding. I love black rats. That one looks like it just ate a small child.

When you say you found it, does that mean you're keeping it? I'd have trouble leaving that one.

well......at this moment it is in a sterilite box. I haven't decided if I will keep it or not.
I will probably give it time to digest the small child it ate..LOL...then I will give it a week and see if it will eat, in captivity. If it eats, I just might have to keep it. I haven't kept a black rat since the 80's and with each one I catch it is getting harder and harder to let them go. Although this one did bite me it didn't latch on and wasn't really too bad. It would probably tame down without too much trouble.
notice how I am talking myself into keeping it, as I type...LOL
here is a pic of the last one I caught...and let go

I was kind of wondering that also. It may well have been a new born duck.

It's amazing what obsoleta rats can handle for food items. Pound for pound , when it comes to eating, nothing is in the class of my 04 black rat. In the wild, these guys eat mice, rats, crows, bird eggs, squirrles, bluejays, you name it, it's fair game. Up in a tree, on the ground, deep in a hole. Awesome snakes.

Jimmy,
The fact that it's in a sterilite box pretty much suggests that YOUR inner child (which was not eaten by the snake) has pretty much decided to keep it for awhile, or maybe even longer. By the way--that's one really nice looking black rat!

regards,
althea
