Bedding for my iguana.......

kevinBD1 May 21, 2005 01:48 PM

I have had my iguana ever since I graduated the 8th grade, and I am now a junior in high shcool. When i got him just about his whole body could fit on the length of my thumb, now he is about 3 feet. Now to the question, In the past I have used indoor/outdoor carpet for substrate, and newspaper. Now I am using a layer method, First layer- trash bag, Second layer- several layers of newspaper, Final layer- carefresh bedding, its kind of a papery substrate, almost like clumped up newspaper but no ink. Does this sound alright?? I am using the carefresh because it is easy to clean up when he poops although lately he has been using his litter box.

I would say to take the trash bags out altogether if they are plastic. That sounds way too dangerous. It could suffocate very easily. The carefresh bedding is too dusty to use for an iguana. It could easily develop a respiratory problem. I think your best bet was what you were using before with the indoor/outdoor carpet and newspaper or even better just stay with plain old newspaper.

The Carefresh litter isn't that bad...it has some dust but I use it for my rats and they do fine. Rats are notorious for respiratory problems! Anyway, I am now using newspaper, but I have also used alfalfa pellets for a substrate. It works great and is very easy to clean. Not to mention if an ig ingests some it will not hurt them

I can understand the comment about the trashbag, but the carefresh is not dusty at all, you must be thinking of something else, or a different kind of carefresh.

I have used Carefresh with my rats and it's great stuff for them.
However, with iguanas, the issue is consuming it that may cause some serious problems with impactions.
Although newspaper isn't very eye-appealing to us, it works great for the iguanas as they won't ingest it and clean up is a snap (just remove paper, put new paper in).
If you don't like the look of newspaper, you can buy unprinted newspaper or use butcher paper.
I would strongly advise against the trashbags or the carefresh.
