That pinky looks like it's going along for the ride lol...
Quick question here, have you ever noticed a regal's venom not working? I threw in a 9" shorthead, with my 19" regal about 15 minutes ago. 2 minutes after I threw it in, the regal bit it once(on the neck) then bit it again mid body. When the garter was trying to grab onto something with it's tail to get leverage to get away, I grabbed it's tail, letting the regal hold it's bite on and continue to pump venom. The surrounding area of the bite(about an inch in each direction), started becoming swollen. I let the garter go. The regal struggled with it, and after they tumbled back and forth, the end scene was a regal with 2 loops of constriction around the garter. I left them, thinking the venom would kill the garter within minutes.
I was wrong. It is now 17 minutes after the bite, and the garter is still moving.
Anyways, nice pics.

Yo, lemme see here...what actually was the outcome? You know I wont discuss tight specifics here, but suffice to say Ive had regals subdue ophidian prey in remarkably short time frames.
Weather or not an opistoglyph can selectively inject venom is an interesting ?...mebbe one of our good Professors from the far ends of the queens empire might weigh in on that...
I dont think its applicable tho in your case as that was a feeding behaviour.
Continue to take accurate field & lab notes...& eventually if not sooner....nature begins to reveal patterns & better questions will likely emerge...

The outcome was after about 23 minutes, the shorthead garter had died, and was being consumed. The other prey items that it attacked, and bit repeatedly, were released, they survived for days after the bite, it was apparent that the snake did not inject venom?

You have seen a couple of feeding trials that I have sent you via email, for the venom to kill the prey can take anywhere from 5 minutes(which is really fast), to about 26 minutes, which the latter has only occured twice. Maybe the venom does not function properly if the snake has not drank water in a while? That would seem logical to some degree...

I'll try to contact Dr. Fry...
