Timing the feeding with live/ frzn rats?

eighteenmonther May 21, 2005 06:45 PM

Hello-

Is it usually easier to get BP's onto frozen thawed rats earlier in the snake's life than it is later on? If so, is it much harder to get them onto a frozen and live diet in their sub-adult and adult life? Finally, what's the best way to get them onto frzns, or frzns and live if they have size/age on them already?

Thanks guys....

I really think it depends on the snake - I have gotten adults that were raised "live eaters" that took right to eating F/T and I have snakes that I've had since hatchlings that won't convert. I have some that go back and forth and one that would rather starve to death than eat f/t. But I do think it would be easier to convert a younger snake, just because they are still growing and eat quite a bit more often than an adult. (But I could be wrong).

I usually start with live what ever they are used to eating. Then start feeding them live off the tongs (gets them used to the process) then I go to prekilled from tongs and then to f/t. But some just take right to the f/t and some you really have to work with them.

Hope this helps.

Why are you feeding live in the first place? That is something you just don't do with any snake. Start feeding them fresh killed, go buy a pair of tongs so when your balls see the tongs they know food and when they recognize the tongs as food they will eat whatever is on the end of the tongs.
