Anyone have a mexican spiny tail?

djoasis May 21, 2005 07:54 PM

I'm looking for a pair. I previously had one but had to put him to sleep. Very sad =( Doe sanyone know a breeder or distributer? I'd prefer not to have a wild caught one, my old one was and he was quite a jack*ss when he wanted to be.

Also 2 other questions.
1. Does anyone know the ACTUAL species name for the mexican spiny tail? No one agees between ctenosaura similis or pectinata. I've asked the sf and oakland zoo's, international iguana society and the academy of sciences. To no avail.

2. my old lizard had severe mbd which was kind of odd because he ate the same food as my other two lizards and they're fine. My vet didn't have the answer so she told me to email where I get my feeders from. I was told by the American Cricket Ranch that sometimes inbreeding among rare species causes genetic defects, but I didn't think that mbd could be genetic. Does anybody know about this?

Thank you

Mark can better answer this question but I believe the acanthura is commonly called the Mexican Spinytail. I've been watching for the last several years and haven't seen any offered for sale in the pet trade, WC or CB. Similis are available and occasionally some pectinata...I've seen a few quinque's around also. There are a couple of people working with the hemilopha complex but babies seem to be few and far between. I lucked into a nice little pair of palearis last year being sold as similis.

Good luck in your search.
