How to find the sex of a baby?

ta2edskin May 21, 2005 08:28 PM

Hi,
I just got a baby iguana today and I was wondering if there is a way to find out what sex it is? I`m going to be making a vet appointment on Monday to make sure everything is ok with him/her, and was wondering if there is something they can do to sex him/her? Thanks for any replys, I`m sure I`ll be back to ask more questions. I will post pics soon after he/her gets use to the new enviroment. Thanks Steve

A vet can probe him, but it isn't very good for the iguana. They can also take blood and run a DNA test, but it's expensive and, really, not neccessary.

Iguanas are sexually dimorphic, and males will develop secondary sex characteristics: enlarged femoral pores, higher nuchal crest, brain bumps, jowels, a hemipenal bulge... When they hit sexual maturity, they will start flashing their hemipenes and even leave seminal plugs. But none of this will start happening until your ig is 12-18 months old, and about 8" SVL. In the best interest of your pocket book and your iguana, the best thing to do is wait and see what develops.
