I would contact

New York State Department of Environmental Protection
Division of Fish and Wildlife
Special License Unit
50 Wolf Road
Albany, NY 12233

and ask to be certain on the laws and speices that it covers.

Hey,

I'm no expert, but I do co train NYS DEC officers on how to identify, capture and manage exotic reptiles. The new ban was not written by DEC. They are quite against it, actually. The new law states that educators can still posess these animals with proper permits, but the DEC wants no one to have these animals in the state. This is why no rules have been promulgated up until this point.

So, old DEC regulation still stands at this point, but they are not issuing interim licenses at this point to anyone new. I know a few people who didn't get their renewal notices and were told to just sit tight.

The new bill states reptiles venomous by nature, as regulated by the DEC. The boomslang and twig snake (I really forget the sci name and subspecies) were the only 2 rear fanged snakes that required a permit to own under DEC regulation.

Now, this does not mean that they won't just add new animals into the definition of venomous. This is actually an area of concern for me. I worry that they don't really understand rear fanged snakes well. Florida recently added false water cobras to their venomous permit list, the last I heard.

If you contact the DEC, please let me know what you find. They are terribly over worked, but nice people.

Later,
Dave
