found snake in central america.

plawqui Jul 12, 2003 03:22 PM

hi ..
i need some help identifying a snake.
im in el salvador, central america.
yesterday my sister found a lil snake crawling around moist concrete in the service "laundry" section of the house.
its like 1mm in diameter and like 4 inches long. its has a yellow collar and its gray, the belly is lighter gray.
so well it looks like a ringneck from my online research, but again, i dont know if the range makes sense for such species. does anyone know if it
a)in fact its a ringneck.
b)some other specie.
c)im stupid and its a worm.
well i kept it because i did not want it to be birds food or ants food or iguana food or my sister's food.
thinking it was a ringneck i got a drawer from a fridge and made a lil living complex for her .. with lots of fresh dirt and a decaying wood patio and a pool and a rock and a little mango tree and some other plants and stuff.also its infested with earthworms and bugs.
could i be right?
sorry this was so long.

I laughed so hard when I read, "c)im stupid and its a worm." LOL! You're too funny!!

From your description, I'd guess ringneck too but without a picture, it's going to be hard for anyone to help you. Can you post one for us to see??

The ringnecks range into Mexico, but not down to where you are. They also have brilliantly colored bellies...not gray.

it does look very much like that.
what bout the yellow neck?

jfmoore Jul 15, 2003 01:47 PM

Yes, small juveniles have a yellowish nuchal collar.

The belly and underside of the tail can be gray. Adult maximum known length is 300 mm (11.8 in). It is a very common species found in a fairly wide variety of habitats. To be honest, I know it occurs in Honduras and Nicaragua, but don’t know anything about El Salvador.

You say it is about 4 inches long. Would you say its tail is short (say one-half inch) or long (one and a half inch)?

Or that'd be my guess. I don't really know Central American herps that well, though. A picture of Enulius flavitorques in Costa Rica is attached below. I wouldn't really have any great ideas on how to care for it, either...

Enulius flavitorques was my first choice as well, until I read that it has a cream-colored venter.

Ah... the picture's just about all I know about the species, so hadn't realized that. And a quick check shows that Enulius flavitorques is the only Enulius or Enuliophis that occurs there... Geophis hoffmanni doesn't have a collar, though, does it? Maybe some sort of Ninia?
