Breeding Sanzinia

TraceH May 23, 2005 12:00 AM

I have become very interested in breeding Madagascar tree boas, Sanzinia madagascariensis. I have heard they can be difficult. Can anyone give any outlines on how to go about doing this? Are there any decent websites out there?

HI,
I have had some success breeding my green pair as well. Doug has a great website, but my animals do things a little differently. FOr instance, they feed almost every week when they are not breeding. That is probably why they had 14 perfect babies at 3 years of age. Also, the first year, my female ate right until she had babies. She skipped last year (as they often do) and shes gravid now. This year she hasn't eaten when gravid. She also never gets in the water dish - either does the male. I have them in 4 foot vision cages. ONe end stays in the 60's and 70's and there is a sterilite tub with moss there. The other end had a 60 watt bulb on during the day and a heating pad on low beneath it. Its gets in the low 80's in winter (light on 10 hours) and in the mid 80's in summer (light on 14 hours). The female usually only basks by day when gravid. When breeding they are always in the box on the cold end. Hope it helps, good luck. Hopefully I'll have some babies in September.
Jeff

Thanks for the information. I have heard the key is to leave the pair together all the time. Could you set them up in trios? Keep me posted on your babies.

I always keep boas in pairs unless the female is ready to drop. Trios have worked for many places. Good luck, will let you know on babies.
