Do you have a stream in your yard? I'd be to freaked out to let my monitors outside to play unless somehow contained or restrained. Your large water monitor (am I correct on species?) is certainly a different story than my little mangroves I guess

Hmmmmm. that is a mangrove, V.indicus. Only its an adult. FR

Scooter will be 12 years old in August You are not the first to think he was other than a mang, I think his size throws a lot of people off. I have heard (don't know if it is true or not) that the purple tongue ones like mine are genetically predisposed to larger size than the pink tongue ones.

Nice to see a fellow mang lover, I’d love to hear about yours, and pictures are always appreciated!
Good luck with yours!

Even if people can't handle it. Or can, or make dumb commets like mine.

I am afraid, in my ignorance, I do not understand why Scooter just doesn't run off? Even if he is tame. Please understand, all I can go on is my own experience and my dang dumb monitors are just too dang crazy to even be left loose for a second. They simply think the world is their huckleberry and they want to play.

I guess its more about the heat, if they are hot, they are different. I do not mean, not tame, they are tame as can be, except for the leaving or going down a hole or climbing up anything they can climb on, or chasing shadows, or simply being whatever a monitor is suppose to be.

For instance, my oldest female lacie, she loves me, she does! Well a couple of years ago, I went and left her cage door unlatched and she went on walkabout. I had a quick look around, then got my son(expert monitor finder, with lots of real experience) I took the perimeter and he started near the cage. We looked and looked, I circled inward and he circled outward(basic tracking method) it was midday and very hot, so I mentioned to keep an eye out in the shade lines(rows of bushes and trees) Well we struck out. Then we heard something and there she was, about 10 feet from her cage. My son, automatically circled, as if she was wild, I said, no worries, she will not run. Then I approached my sweet little thing and she, well she bolted, much to my amazement. I cornered her and she opened her mouth(just an act) I picked her up and said to my son, I did not think she would run. He said, I did.

That evening, when the sun was low, I tracked her, she actually left our five acres and returned to her cage. And she did use the shade lines. Oh by the way, she was very gravid and laid five days later. Thanks for allowing me to tell my story. Cheers FR

very nice to see him enjoying himself and I am sure you are too.

I cannot say my mangroves would let me do tat they would no doubt bolt and be gone. However I do have other monitors that are content enough to let go on walkabout without to much worry.

I have tried to figure out what makes some of them act differently then others. I have no idea other then it must be an individual thing. I really have no clue but do find it interesting.

walkabout.... austrailians? I can't say Artimus wouldn't try to run, I know he will. But he always manages to go into my clothes pin and hide under my super man blanket. =-)
