Grey rat with orange-colored skin?

wombat May 23, 2005 09:21 AM

This is my first grey rat (great snake, active and alert but not defensive, strong feeding response) and I was surprised to see it have some orange in it's skin tones- (look at loop to left of snake's head)maybe calls to mind a Baird's...

Is this usual for a "White Oaks" grey rat or should I suspect a crossbreeding somewhere in this gal's past?

Thx Wombat

Very nice looking snake. I have five Grays myself, and none of them show any orange, but I have seen pictures of WC Blacks and Texans that show more orange then that, and they are said to be normal. It does not look like an intergrade from the photo. I think you got what you paid for, if that I what you are wanting to know.

Thanks- I'm realy enjoying this snake, am looking for a male to some day mate with her. Since I'm planning to breed her I wanted to put that to rest in my mind...

Hello there,

The snake you are holding in the picture definately is a true 'white oak', and a damn fine specimen too. It's not uncommon for 'white oaks' to have some subtle hints of orange or champagne. That's just one of many things adding up to the beauty is these great animals. Enjoy!

Greetings,

Herman.
