For the Chuck gurus

Crotaphytuskidd May 23, 2005 06:59 PM

Hey guys,

I had a quick question which arose because of the numerous sexing questions asked of late. Do male Chucks develope the enlarged post-anal scales before or after their femoral pore developement? Or are the post-anals even worth mentioning here? Thanks for the insight.

regards,
-Phil

Phil-post anal scales as found in swift lizards and horned lizards and others are there at birth and part of their normal scale design. My Fringe-toad male has them, the chuck males do not, but they do have the typical hemi-penal bulge and they have very ponounced pores under the legs. In an imature male it may be hard to tell sex, but once they get older they exude a waxy looking substance from these pores under the legs. So if you were to compare with a female, there pores are very insignificant in comparison to the males. In some chucks the color is a dead give away but they are fairly easy to sex once you've been around them for awhile.......Cheers!!
