Changing up my mixed feed a bit..now questions..

Lucien Jul 12, 2003 04:39 PM

Alright, I've decided to change up my feed somewhat.. the grains and stuff though I'll still be adding the dog food.. What I want to know is what kind of mix I can ask for at a feed store.. Someone had said something about a rolled feed mixture... dry sweet feed or...dry cob....all mentioned differently but I want to be sure what I'm buying is the correct thing. No lab blocks, too expensive for my tastes when you can get more for less in mixing up your own food.

50# dry cobb
50# black oil sunflower seed
50# rolled or cracked corn
150# dogfood

mix it in a big 'ole garbage can.. and you are in business for awhile..

other options would be..

whole corn
normal sunflower seeds

and stay away from "wet cobb".. its just dry cob but its been coated with MOLASSES (spelling?)... sugar and small animals is a bad bad idea.

best of luck

I'm just using a rolled feed consisting of rolled oats, and flaked barley and corn. I add in a bit of dog or cat food to up the protein level. I don't figure there's any point in pre-mixing that in, I just put in a bit with every feeding...they'll pick it out anyhow. I also put in some dandelion greens fairly often. The nursing females really appreciate them, and they are high in calcium. (Plus, they are growing in my yard, and thus are free).

Is there any specific name for the rolled feed or should I just describe it to the Feed store? I'm calling them tomorrow to check on prices for everything. See, I'm running low on my present mix... which I bought enough of before I moved to last a while.. its just now running down...and prices where I used to get it were much cheaper than where I am now.. So I'm looking for some alternatives to what I have been feeding.

I'm using Nutrena premium mixed grains.
Just look over what they have, and make a decision based on costs, nutritional values of the grains, and additives and such. (For example, avoid anything "medicated", or with added sugar or salt).
