one grumpy king

i have a few months old california king and whenever i pick him up he deficates but when i finially get a hold of him he is pretty tame. is this normal for younger snakes? do you think he will gorw out of it? thanks

Snakes will calm, depending upon the amount of time you put in. Continue to hold it a few times a week and it will probably stop.

There is another important conosideration - snakes, I believe, learn from behavior like all other animals. Consider that if you put the snake back in its cage as soon as he dumps a load on you - well you are just reinforcing the behavior. In other words, he will learn that to be left alone he merely has to musk you. I suggest NOT putting him down after he dumps on you.

I can tell you that I have 2 Eastern Hognose Snakes. I make sure that as soon as they play dead I put them BACK in their cages... because in this case I am trying to keep them from losing that behavior.
