Philly herping

Tonight I caught a young eastern milksnake in the Wissahickon Valley section of Fairmont Park in Philadelphia. While this is a large wooded park (a few thousand acres) I was still impressed to find a milksnake within the city limits of Philadelphia. I have also found garters, brown snakes, water snakes, painted and snapping turtles, american toads and redback salamanders in the park. While that list does not compare to what you might find in the Pine Barrens an hour away or farther west into the mountains, it's not bad for somewhere you can reach on a short ride on a city bus from downtown Philadelphia, PA.

Wow pretty suprised that you found a milksnake and red backs in fairmont park. Dead bodies and beer can are normally what you see. I live over the walt whitman in jersey. Its nice to know there is some reptiles over in fairmont. Keep updating if you find anything else. Ever see any boxies??

I've heard about the bodies, I've seen lots of beer cans (and bottles dating back a century). I'll doubt box turtles - too many people walking around who would take them, but you never know. I wasn't expecting the milksnake. I'll be out there again this weekend and I'll post if I find anything.

if your from the philly area I was just wondering if you remember a petstore named bowers aquarium in kensington. Just curious if the place is still in business or if you have ever heard of it.
