Colouring of my California Kingsnake

kta May 24, 2005 07:24 AM

I bought a baby CKS about 10 months ago. It was advertised as "Desert Phase". Ive always known my snake to have dark brown and cream colouring as opposed to black and white, but now ive realised that the cream colouring is actually a mix of white and yellow. After doing some research I found a website that gave the following information:

"Chocolate Phase" describes a californian king snake with a ground colour of brown and yellow and "Desert Phase" describes a black and white ground colour.

Does this mean my snake is actually chocolate phase? Is chocolate phase a spinoff from desert phase?

In the wild there are a LOT MORE color combos in cal kings besides (brown & yellow) and (black & white). Cal kings can change in color from hatchlings to adults. Sometimes the "black" will turn to a dark brown and sometimes the "white" will turn to a cream or yellow.

To infer that cal kings are either "coastal" or "desert" is a misnomer. There are coastal cal kings and there are desert cal kings, but there is much more...........
