OT: Wild Snake Sighting

aplaxco May 24, 2005 10:31 AM

I was driving down a country road near my work yesterday and was distracted by avoiding a mother pheasant and her babies who ran out in front of me. I ran over the top of what I thought was a hose in the road until at the last moment I saw it move. Mortified that I had run over a snake I turned around and went back. It must have coiled up so I missed running it over with my tires. I got to see my first wild gopher snake hightail it back into the grass at the side of the road. It was the biggest wild snake I've ever seen! Too cool for words on an especially bad day for me. I just had to share...

LOL. How are you doing stranger?I fish and hunt alot and see all kinds of the local reptile life.I love it.Jimmy has a great pic of a black rat he caught fishing last weekend.I took this shot a few weeks back of a northern water snake at one of my favorite herp/fishing holes.
If you really want to see snakes try the same road at night driving slowy....Paul

And I haven't figured out how to use my new digital. But I think I'll carry it with me out here from now on. I think I will come out at night and scout around to see what I can see. The new digital camera has a flash, and a macro setting, if I can just figure out how it all works...

I'm getting married next month so as you can imagine I have been eating, sleeping, and breathing stupid girlie wedding stuff so I haven't been posting much. To top it off my dad died rather unexpectedly last week It's been a crazy busy and sad time for me. I feel like I'm still operating in a kind of daze.

On a good note my snakes are doing well. I have two clutches incubating (butters and blizzards, oh my) and I thought I had killed one whole clutch of butters because it dried out a bit before I noticed my girl laid but I seem to have saved some of them. So...two down and six more to go. For some reason they are all laying really late this year but most of them have shed in the last week so any time now. I think moving to a slightly cooler environment (1 hour north of our old home) has thrown off their little internal clocks.

I think I would have had to go Crocadile Hunter on that one.

I've been all brave lately with the local lizards. My boys and I caught a Western Fence Lizard and I actually picked him up to show the kids his bright blue belly. I also caught a skink of some kind and since it had already lost his tail I picked him up to check him out too. He was really cool with a pastel orange head. I'm feeling very Steve Irwin these days. I work out in the middle of the agricultural part of N. California so we get a lot of critter who come into our buildings. The other girls all know to call me now so I can come catch and release them back into the wild. I love it! Wild snakes still scare me though. It would be just my luck to grab a rattler by the tail...lol.

Congrats on the big day coming up. Also Im really sorry to hear about your dad. Your becoming quite the reptile expert. Hears a good one for you. My wife was in the hospital for a few days last week. When we were in the emergency room waiting to get in I overheard a security guard talking on the radio about calling animal control to report a snake. I told him I would catch it if they wanted me to. He said I could give it a shot if I wanted. It was way on the other side of the hospital. My wife said to go ahead and go help. Just then they came out for her. I told the guard I better take care of mamma, and let the pros take care of it. I found out later it was a Copperhead under the seat of a car. If I had gone running around there My wife and I would have probably ended up sharing a room.lol
