There is no "good" way to "pick" a shed off a small snake.
The best method I can think of is to mist the snake in the enclosure and get him soaked. If he does not rub the remaining old skin off himself. I would soak him in a tupperware container with water. Fill the container with enough water to submerse the snake completely, but not too much. Place the lid on the container for about 15 minutes or so. If his old skin does not fall off or if he does not rub it off you can gently remove it by hand only if it is easily "rubbed" off without any harm to the snake.

The reason your snake had this problem is probably due to the fact that the humidity was too low in his enclosure. A moist hide is not needed, but you must make sure it always has a bowl of fresh water to not only drink out of but to also soak himself in. When I notice one of my snakes in the blue I sometimes spray its enclosure, although it is not necessarily needed. I have also been known to purposely spill a small ammount of water from its waterbowl on the warm side of the enclosure, just to create some humidity....
Hope this helps you out.

Also post a pic of your new Thayeri whenever and if you can. I am sure we would all enjoy viewing him.
