questions for the ptychozoon keepers out there.

mp1 May 24, 2005 11:49 AM

I'm dying to get my hands on ptychozoon kuhli and wanted to find some input from those who've kept them before.
First and foremost, for the course of the next 8-12 months or so, a 10ga aquarium viv is the best/largest I could provide. Various caresheets aside, what opinions exist amongst you guys related to this? I've heard/read both ways.
Related to this, how important is the vertical orientation? I understand that it's an arboreal species, correct?
Last question: What is their apetite like? My T.Gracilis has a super slow metabolism and it'd be nice to have someone to pick up her slack around the dinner table, so to speak.

Thanks a bunch guys
Matt

Matt,

I think you will find flying geckos less fulfilling than imagined. For the most part, these geckos hide and are quite sedentary. In the evening and when breeding they are more active, but quite pale in comparison to other species. However, if you like that kind of thing, they do have a very interesting shape and attitude.

We've kept them in 10 gallons oriented vertically (which is QUITE important) for acclimation, but you will have better results from larger permanent homes, as 10 gals are really pretty small in relation to the size and theoretical activity level of the animals. (Such as larger = more natural activity)

The appetite varies of course, but isnt particularly voracious. They come in EXTREMELY parisitized, and if you arent really good with acclimating wild caughts, I dont think I would waste my time. They have a serious internal parasite load, as well as external, and since they cant be handled, treating is really quite difficult.

That being said, if you can find some CB, I would encourage you to try them! You might like them- Alejandro with Emerald Exotics seems to have them CB time to time (check the classifieds).

If you are looking for somehting active, 10 gallon worthy and that has a good appetite, what about some gold dust day geckos?

Leah-
Thanks for the info. I hadn't heard about ptychozoon's tendancy to be parasitized like that.
I had looked at the day geckos in the past but the flying geckos kept grabbing my attention.
Initially the gecko I've wanted to add to my collection was the moorish/crocodile (T.Mauretanica). I've kept those before, though and thought Ptychozoon might be an interesting departure.

Maybe I'll have to look at the day gecko again

Thanks
Matt
