Cat Litter substrates for land tortoise

lbk4680 May 24, 2005 11:52 AM

Hi everybody,

my sis have suggested using Cat Litter Daily Scoops from Hagen. It is pellet and made from recycled paper.

Does anybody knows this product and know if its safe to be used as substrates for my tortoise?

If not, what's the best substrates for tortoise and also reduce odour to the minimum?

Thanks a lot!

Dear God, NO. The tortoise could eat it and have a life-threatening impaction.

What type of tortoise? What size? Depending on the species and size, you can use mulch, or a mixture of sand, mulch, and chemical-free topsoil. For a tort that needs higher constant humidity, such as a redfoot, yellowfoot, or hingeback, I'd recommend the mulch.

Just an FYI, most substrates sold in pet stores are bad for tortoises. A home improvement store and the grocery store will serve your tortoise better than a pet store (except for the UVB bulbs).

Mine is the Leopard Tortoise.

I have removed the litters after only 5mins realising that my tortoises trying to eat the hard pellets. Now they are on paper, I also realise that they nibble and tear the edges of the paper...hmm..

anyway, should I go back to the use of apen wood shavings?
my family have been complaining about the smell though I feel the smell are from the wood shavings that I change daily..

are there better choices..

Thanks Katrina.
