Cat Litter substrates for land tortoise

lbk4680 May 24, 2005 11:53 AM

Hi everybody,

my sis have suggested using Cat Litter Daily Scoops from Hagen. It is pellet and made from recycled paper.

Does anybody knows this product and know if its safe to be used as substrates for my tortoise?

If not, what's the best substrates for tortoise and also reduce odour to the minimum?

Thanks a lot!

Cat litter is not a good substrate. It's probably the worst for causing intestinal obstruction due to it's absorbant nature.

The best way to keep any enclosure from smelling is daily cleaning. With tortoises, this is a must, because they generally urinate/defecate daily. Spot cleaning is usually sufficient, but entire substrate changes are needed regularly.

I use wood shavings; which has it's pro's and con's. Dirt and soil work well for many species.
