What ever happened to the NY bill/law???....

-ryan- May 24, 2005 01:27 PM

I remember hearing a rumor somewhere that they had temporarily pulled the law for retooling....how can I find out about the validity of this? I personally think they went about it the completely wrong way...but we've already discussed this at length so right now I just want to know what's been going on with the law thus far.

I also noticed that the local shops are still selling burms and black throat monitors, with the idea that everyone's already forgotten about them, so there isn't a problem. I don't think this is the right way to do things either, but it's their call if they want to take that risk.

any info would be good.

The dept. responsible for enforcing the law (forgot which one it was) basically said they were not going to enforce the law as written. It went back to the assembly, the parts the dept. objected to were rewritten to make it more enforcable (mainly things like fees and whatnot), it was passed unanimously in both legistative chambers and signed by the governor. The changes were minor, the only thing that will affect members of this forum is that Komodos are now considered dangerous exotic animals, along with the black throats, white throats, Niles, waters, and crocs (they left out Komodos before). So, it is now law. Whether anyone is going to enforce it is another issue altogether.

Thanks a lot. That's basically what I've been figuring. The only thing I've been worried about is that the vets I've talked to said that they are going to enforce the law in that they either won't treat the animal (which I find both cruel and hard to believe), or they will turn you in after treating the animal. Other than that, I still see monitors and large constrictors for sale, and they are still being purchased.

It is being enforced. So far, I know of a croc monitor confiscated from a pet shop and a black throat monitor being confiscated from a private individual.

That's good in its own way sort of. At least then people won't be afraid to give them the vet care they deserve.
