My first ever homemade enclosure.

AlteredMind99 May 24, 2005 01:40 PM

I am building an enclosure (7x3x2 LWH) for my female red tegu. What can i use to paint it that isn't toxic to reptiles?

In case you have not already done so, I suggest posting this question on the Tegu forum and possibly even the Monitor forum. Both places have some very experienced cage builders who will have more specific information as to what can withstand the humidity and scratch resistance requirements of a tegu.

If it were me I'd either laminate Fiberglass Reinforced Panel onto the interior surface or I'd use West Systems Epoxy. The latter is clear but can go over a painted surface if that's what you want.

There may be something cheaper and/or more simple but I'm just not sure. When I've kept these species I only used FRP, epoxy, or concrete rockwork.

Thanks, I have posted it on the tegu forum but that forum doesn't move very fast so i figured i would try here as well. So I can just paint it and then coat the paint with epoxy?

thanks

Sorry, I meant to mention that. Yes, you can coat paint with epoxy if you want a clear coat. However, not all paints are compatible with all epoxies. What can happen is the epoxy solvents may partially dissolve the paint and sort of lift it up into the epoxy layer. Not always a pleasant look.

So pick out the epoxy first, that's the important part, and then see what paints it is compatible with.

Or just use an epoxy paint. I'm not sure if they are as scratch resistant as West Systems, however, and they come in pretty boring colors.

There is also the choice of epoxy paint (already colored) but I'm not sure if they are all as scratch resistant as West Systems, for example. Pool epoxy paint should work but the colors are boring.

Envirotex Epoxy will work over any paint and is super easy to use but it's does end up being more expensive and I have no first hand experience with it being used around scratching species.
