Snake in college?

PhunkeyPhish Jul 12, 2003 05:49 PM

Im leavbing for college in a lil over a month, and i just found out that my college is pretty relaxed on keeping pets in the form, although its technically not allowed... I would love to get a snake, ive had and still have lizards and turtles, but never a snake. I will only have room for a 15 gallon aquarium however, and also a heat lamp isnt a good diea i dont think for a dorm, but i know most snakes, at least some snakes, get their heat from the ground underneath not the sun above, so a heat pad for under the aquairum, would work out good. If anyone knows any friendly, snakes that attain heat from underneath and will live comfortably in a 15 gallon aquarium please let me know of what kinds of snakes they are. I was thinking even just a garter snake? Thanks.

I would wait if I were you. At least until YOU settle in, and make sure that things are as relaxed as you have heard. Also, will you have a roommate? You will want to make sure that nobody in your room objects to a snake. Also...they might be laid back about hamsters and goldfish...but sometimes snakes get a little stronger response.
If the coast truly is clear once you get there (and settle in yourself), then I would think a corn would be a great choice.
Good luck with your new adventure. Duffy

What kind of corn snake do you think would be best? And also i think i will wait a monh or so, but i think it will be fine, my 'orientation leader' keeps a cat in her dorm... and my room mate happens to be my best friend from highschool.

There's only one kind of corn snake... it just comes in a lot of colors.

A young one. Born in captivity. From a reliable breeder.
Since you are about to embark on another phase of your education...I suggest you educate yourself on snakes as much as possible also. The corn snake forum (if you choose a corn),and the Corn Snake Manual (K. Love) would be good places to start.
Best of Luck. Duffy

Unfortunately, my college is only allowing "2 fish" in a small aquarium. I think I can slide my 2 tiger salamanders by, but I've been going through heck trying to find housing for my 8 foot boa! As of right now a teacher has offered to let her stay in a room on South Campus where other research critters are, but I can't get in touch with him! GRRR!!!
