Argentine Black & White Tegu Info

Lizardllady May 24, 2005 07:28 PM

Hello,

I'm thinking about getting an Arg. Black & White Tegu and I am researching them. What do most people feed them? It will aventually free-roam when it gets older, do they get along with iguanas? Do they tame down pretty quickly?

Thank you for any info you can give me.

Try to feed a varied diet. I feed primarily rodents and lean (93% or better) ground turkey with vit/calcium supplements. I also feed crickets, mealworms, superworms, cockroaches, fruits (kiwi, strawberry, grapes), etc.

As far as free roaming, I have 7 tegus. Five of them are my pets (which I will also be using for breeding) and 2 are rescues that I will one day rehome. Out of those five tegus I have as pets, only one does not go outside and free roam, at the local public parks even.

Here are a few park pictures...

Hi Rick,

Thank you for your response. Do I cook the turkey? Do you feed mice everyday? You didn't mention it but do you feed whole eggs?

I can't beleive you take your tegus outside without a leash and they don't runaway. By the way, the park is beautiful and so are your tegus.

What did you use for substrate?

>Do I cook the turkey?

Nope, raw 93% or better lean ground turkey. You can mix it some blended fruits or veggies too.

>Do you feed mice everyday?

No. I feed rodents one day and turkey the next. I feed fruits every day and superworms, crickets, etc as snacks throughout.

>You didn't mention it but do you feed whole eggs?

I do occasionally feed fertile eggs that I pick up from a local who raises chickens for eggs. I recently picked up an incubator so I can start hatching some eggs each month and feed the small chicks to my tegus as well.

Thank you.

>What did you use for substrate?

Cypress mulch when available, Repti-Bark(tm) otherwise.

I'm planing on puting the baby Tegu in a 3' Vision Cage, rigging up a fixture and Reptisun 10.0 inside close to about mid-cage to the back of the cage and puting a Mega-Ray in the basking well. Also a under-tank heater. Is this setup okay?
