Trouble gettin baby pac man to eat

jwthought May 25, 2005 12:45 AM

Hi,
He's about the size of a quarter and is not interested in the crickets I offer him. Ive had him about a week and he is about the size of a quarter. I was thinking of trying a small guppy. The specs of his enclosure are all where they should be. I have had them at this size before, but that was a few years ago, and I honestly dont remember how I got it to begin feeding, haha. I feel like he just needs some time to settle in, but any tips/advice would be appreciated. Thanks

I would suggest trying to feed every other day and not to worry too much. That suggestion however is made with a complete lack of data to make a full suggestion. All the specs of the tank should be posted including temp, humidity, tank size, substrate, any undertank heaters, hides, etc.

The specs of his enclosure: aprox 80 degrees, humidity 70-80%, I am using moist paper towel substrate with sphagmun moss that he burrows in, shallow declorinated water dish. I currently have him in a 10g tank, but I also have a small critter keeper that I was going to move him into but I wanted him to eat first before I stressed him out with another move. No under tank heater. I am offering him gutloaded 1/4 inch ( maybe smaller) crickets, maybe 2-3 at a time. Sorry for the lack of info. Thanks

just give your pacman time, and he will eat. new surroundings can stress them out. maybe put some substrate in the tank so he can exersize his instinct to burrow and feel secure.

also, your crickets may be too small and he just isnt interested. when my pacman was the size of a gumball she got two large crickets every 2 days. these crix were about an inch long and she had no problems taking them down. also, as a baby, she was very shy about eating in front of me. so when you feed yours, put the food in there and walk away for a few minutes.

Thanks Rachel. Unfortunately, it seems to be more than he is just nervous around me, at least at this point. I saw him convulsing this morning, it looked like he was doing a push up. This is a sign of malnutrishment, so I took him to a herp vet. The vet said he was low in glucose, calcium, and a bit on the skinny side. I have to force feed him a bit of chicken babyfood mixed with calcium powder. He has been fed 3 times today, and although his shaking has stopped, he looks lethargic and weak. I really feel badly for him. I was also told to try to feed him a guppy. I have the worst luck buying frogs from reptile shows...very frustrating. Anyway, I'll do my best to save him. thanks and wish us luck.

oh i'm sorry you are having problems with him to this extent already i do wish you luck though! you know, i have had problems with obtaining herps from reptile shows as well. i lost two baby chameleons i got from a show, it was so sad. i was syringe feeding them because they wouldn't eat from stress and all other sorts of malnourishment. my healthiest herps i've got from reputable petstores. you can check out pics of my pacman and other herps here

Thanks Rachel, Ive figured out what is wrong. He's impacted with sphagnum moss. I've noticed that after a few of these feedings, he looked much fuller, almost to the point of looking bloated, but he hasnt defecated at all. So when I woke up today to check on him, there was a strand of the moss coming out if his anus. The vet is not open today either, and I knew that toxins were going to kill him from the build up of waste in his body, so I had to act. I very carefully pulled the strand and was able to safely (i hope) remove a small clump of it. Very little feces in it though. So my new question is, do you know of anything frog safe, readily available laxative? I was thinking castor oil? Please let me know. Thanks again

gonexenopus May 31, 2005 09:07 AM

oh no! i'm glad you were able to catch it though, and now you know how to treat it. i dont know what a laxative for a pacman would be...? something oily though. a few times i've had immpacted African Clawed Frogs (xenopus) and i used beefheart to help pass pieces of ingested gravel. any food that is soft and mushy seemed to help push it along. although, i dont know the affects of using beef on impacted pacmans as well. let me know what you end up doing. goodluck

I didnt catch it in time. He died later that day. He was not responding to any stimulus and was allowing me to manipulate him any way i wanted. I wanted to get him to the vet, but it was memeorial day and it was closed, so I had to try something. I tried to give him a small bit of cator oil, but he didnt make it. I'm upset with myself and my vet. Impaction was my first impression of his problem, but the vet said it was hypoglycimic righ away. We didnt even address the possiblilty of impaction. Im so mad. Anyway, thanks for the help. I appreciate it.
