Cagemates???

chameleon2005 May 25, 2005 12:55 AM

Hello,

I have a male gargoyle gecko, I am considering purchasing a female for company for him and hopefully more

Are they likely to fight with each other? Or should they be ok?

Thanks in advance

Phil

They should be fine only babies will take a bite out of (tails) each other.

personally i would only keep them together for breeding, otherwise keep them seperate.

especially in groups, females can become a little aggressive towards the male from what I have read about breeding groups and it can also become harder to monitor everyones nutrition.

a couple females in a large enough enclosure is ok, but males in my opinion should only be added for breeding, and then removed. i know a couple gargoyle hobbyists that do this as well.

i have had mine together for well over a year and the only problem i had was when i was moving and they were both in a critter keeper. not enough room i guess and she took his tail off. good thing they grow back. other than that they have gotten along great, even sleeping next to or on top of eachother on occasion.i have heard of problems when introducing males only for breeding when females feel like being a little territorial. if this happens it will most likely happen soon after you put him in. just keep an eye on them at first. either way you go i do not see any major problems. (but as mentioned before , young auriculatus will be hostile towards eachother) they calm down as they get older
