Cat Litter substrates BTS?

lbk4680 May 25, 2005 01:10 AM

Hi everybody,

my sis have suggested using Cat Litter Daily Scoops from Hagen. It is pellet and made from recycled paper.

Does anybody knows this product and know if its safe to be used as substrates for my BTS?

If not, what's the best substrates for tortoise and also reduce odour to the minimum?

Thanks a lot!

Tortoise??? Or BTS? anyway, i heard that rabbit pellets make a good substrate, but you need to change it frequently if it's wet/soiled from urine/feces. And, your BTS/tort can eat it as well. Or, you may opt for paper towels...

My "babies" :
1.0.0 Indo BTS (Tiliqua gigas gigas)
0.0.1 Rainbow skinks (Mabuya multifasciata)
0.0.3 RES (Trachemys scripta elegans)
0.0.4 Amboina box turtles (Cuora amboinensis)
1.0.0 Chinese softshell (Trionyx sinensis)
1.0.0 Asian leaf turtle (Cyclemys dentata)
1.0.0 Leopard gecko (Eublepharis macularius)
And still growing...

Oh sorry, was planning to use the Hagen Cat Litter for both my BTS and Tortoise. Its made of Recyled Paper and contains no clay, sand or fine particles. It might be a good substrates for these animals if proven safe.

Seeking opinion from people who knows this specific product from Hagen. Hagen Cat Litter "Daily Scoops".

Thanks.

As long as you are diligent about keeping it clean (daily), I don't think this would be a problem. I wouldn't use it for your tortoise though, as they may ingest it. What kind of tortoise do you have?

I keep my BTS and most of my snakes on newspaper and CareFresh bedding. When I had pet rats I used CareFresh as well and it really helped keep the smell down.

I've decided to stick the to use of Aspen shavings from Kaytee.
It looks better than Carefresh, but I'm not sure if it abosrbs odour better than carefresh... my family doesnt like the smell of wood shavings though...

Anybody with a even better recommendation?

Shredded wood bark has more of a natural smell when moist (I keep my mangrove monitor on it) and less so when kept dry as for a BTS. It also looks fantastic, and allows for burrowing.

Hi thanks for the recommendation. Is there a specific brand that you would recommend?

Thanks!

I'm terrible when remembering brand names, but it often comes in big chips or a more shredded style. I prefer the shredded.
