Do you want a vegetarian? Cricket eater? Rodent eater?

How much reptile keeping experience do you have?

Do you want to be able to handle it often?

How much space can you dedicate to it?

What are you looking to pay?

If all that you want to use is the 40gal tank and a heat lamp, I'd suggest a small snake like a corn snake or one of the geckos that don't reqire UV lighting like a Leo or crested. (though technically, they don't need the heat lamp either). Most of your other types of reptiles are going to need a UVB source as well.

As the previous poster stated, if you can give more info on what you are looking for in your pet, it would be helpful for suggestions.
